Note on regional structure: The United Kingdom is treated as a separate region from the European Union. The UK left the EU in 2020 and operates its own independent tax system (PAYE, administered by HMRC). EU countries use their own national tax systems within the broader EU framework.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง United Kingdom

The UK uses the PAYE (Pay As You Earn) system, administered by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC). Income Tax and National Insurance are the two main deductions from your gross salary. Scotland has its own separate income tax bands, set by the Scottish Parliament.

Our UK calculators are the most detailed on this site โ€” they use the official 2025/26 tax bands and include Scotland-specific rates.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ European Union

EU member states each operate their own national tax systems. While there is no single EU-wide income tax, most countries share common features: progressive income tax bands, mandatory social security contributions, and employer-withheld payroll taxes.

Our EU calculators provide simplified estimates based on publicly available 2024 tax rates. They are clearly labelled as estimates and include explanations of each country's tax system.

Estimate notice: EU country calculators provide approximate gross-to-net estimates. Tax rules in each country are complex and depend on personal circumstances, filing status, regional rates, and other factors. These estimates are for informational purposes only.

๐ŸŒ Global

Outside the UK and EU, major economies like the USA, Canada, and Australia each have distinct payroll tax systems. The USA uses federal income tax plus FICA (Social Security and Medicare). Canada uses federal income tax plus CPP and EI contributions. Australia uses PAYG withholding plus a Medicare Levy.

All global calculators provide simplified estimates based on federal/national rates only. State, provincial, or territorial taxes are not included.
